Cyber Security Passes Senate Committee

Cyber Security Passes Senate Committee

On June 24, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed S 3480, Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, to establish the Office of Cyberspace Policy and create a plan to combat attacks on the nation’s cyber infrastructure.  As part of its mission, the new Office would coordinate public and private sector efforts to increase cybersecurity.

The bill also allows the President to declare a national emergency if it is determined that there is a threat to critical cyber infrastructure.  In expressing support for the bill, several Committee members noted that, in addition to expected consequences from a cyber attack, such an action could also cause dams to fail, shut down electric power distribution, and affect other critical infrastructures including water.

You may view and/or download a copy of this bill by going to ASDWA’s website and clicking on the link to THOMAS and, once there, inserting the bill number or name.
