Sen. Lieberman Still Wants to Add Water to CFATS

Although water and wastewater chemical security requirements were not part of the “CFATS extension” (HR 2868) that passed the Senate Homeland Security Committee earlier this year, Committee Chair Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) has expressed an interest in amending the legislation should it come to the Senate Floor during this year’s lame duck session.  Lieberman wants to see the chemical security mandate extended to incude drinking water and wastewater utilities.  Whether this bill comes up during the limited session is a key question…as it may have dropped lower on the Senate priority list.  Timing is everything, however.  The impetus for pushing this particular legislation forward next year may be diminished since the Democrats have lost their majority in the House and are seeing their clout lessened in the Senate.
