FEMA Invites Comment on National Preparedness Goal

Earlier this year, President Obama issued Presidential Policy Directive (PPD) 8 on the subject of national preparedness.  PPD 8 calls for the development of a national preparedness goal “…that identifies the core capabilities necessary for preparedness and a national preparedness system to guide activities that will enable the Nation to achieve the goal.  The system will allow the Nation to track the progress of our ability to build and improve the capabilities necessary to prevent, protect against, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from those threats that pose the greatest risk to the security of the Nation.”  PPD 8 is available at:  http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/laws/gc_1215444247124.shtm

In working toward this national preparedness goal, FEMA is inviting public input on the proposed draft (link provided below).  The draft defines the core capabilities necessary to prepare for the specific types of incidents posing the greatest risk to the security of the Nation.  The National Preparedness Goal is also designed to establish concrete, measurable, prioritized objectives to mitigate specific threats and vulnerabilities and emphasize actions intended to achieve an integrated, layered, accessible, and whole community preparedness approach while optimizing the use of available resources.

You are encouraged to review and provide comment on the National Preparedness Goal using the comment sheet below and send them to PPD8-Engagement@fema.gov.  The deadline to submit comments is September 2.
