AWWA Shares New, No Cost Cybersecurity Guidance and Tool

As reported at the end of January, AWWA has released a new cybersecurity guidance called Process Control System Security Guidance for the Water Sector.  They now have added a web-based supporting Use-Case Tool, which puts forth a transparent and repeatable process for evaluating a utility’s process control system. In order to provide the widest benefit, the guidance and tool are free and publicly available.

The development of this resource is based on recommendations in the 2008 Roadmap for Securing Process Controls Systems in the Water Sector. It also complements the priorities developed jointly by the Water Sector Coordinating Council and Government Coordinating Council in 2013. In addition, new water sector guidance supports the national-level actions that have resulted from EO 13636 in which NIST was directed to develop the voluntary Cybersecurity Framework that was issued last week.
